"You Need To Let Go For The Lord" (Luke 12:13-21 )
Originally Delivered: January 27, 2008
Message Length: 29 min.
Abstract -

In Luke 12, Jesus speaks about greed, using a parable about the Rich Fool as an example.  Many think of greed having only to do with money.  In today's message, Steve Vlasak (Elder) identifies that greed has to do with anything that consumes your thinking or gets in the way of your pursuing a developing relationship with the Lord.  He suggest that every so often you need to take inventory of the items in your life that "control you" and get rid of them!

(Note:  For a different point of view on this Bible passage see and listen to "Thou Shall Have No Other Gods Before Me".)

Message Outline - Question Of The Week

Preface – Luke 12: 1-12

Jesus is speaking to thousands on a very important point

Be afraid not of man, but of anyone that can throw you in to hell

Luke 12: 4-5

12: 13-14

two brothers fighting over money

no indication he is listening to Jesus’ message

12: 14

Jesus appears angry!

These matters are normally settled by a rabbi

You’re not listening to me!

12: 15

A call of action

"all kinds" of greed (greed is abundant)

"a man’s life does not consist . . ."

While material Objects are a major definition of "things we hang on to", there are many others . . .

Emotions (hate, jealousy), Pride, Money, Sin Jeff Foxworthy . . .

Objects –

(Neighbor with the toys, camper, motorcycles, snowmobiles, scooters, etc.)

Example - Trip to Harbor Freight

We get into financial trouble and don’t want to sell them

They get in our way of seeking the Lord – we might have to give them up

Pride –

Needing to be the center of attention

Being haughty

Acts 8: 9- Simon the Sorcerer

Money –

Constant focus of your thought

Separate bank accounts from spouse

Matt 6:24 – Can’t serve two masters ("hate one and love the other", "be devoted to one and despise the other", "You can’t serve both God and money")

No where in the bible does it talk about the use of money in heaven, and you can’t take it with you!

Sin –

I am so sinful there is no hope

This is the greatest millstone that can be hung on a neck

1st Timothy 1: 15-17

We "covet" these objects, the pride, the money, and the sin.

Covet – (Websters) : "to feel inordinate desire for what belongs to another"

They belong to the world, not to the Godly individual

12: 16-19

12: 20-21

There is a direct relationship between the one who can cause loss of eternal life after death, and the what that can cause eternal death before death.

Conclusion:

  • This whole passage is Jesus teaching about greed and the desire to have more that what is needed.
  • This is not to say we can’t have the boat or camper, we just can’t permit the objects, pride, money, sin, etc. to consume our thinking or way of life.
  • This is a continual process of checking ourselves and making the right decision. Don’t be like the Rich Ruller (Luke 18: 18-23)
