"Do You Love Me?" (John 21: 1-25)
Originally Delivered: March 30, 2008
Message Length: 33 min.
Abstract -

Today's message is the last of a five part series presented for Easter 2008. (See "Prayer Power" (John 17:1-26), "Enter His Gates" (John 13:1-17), "We are the Champions" (John 12:12-19), and "Beginning" (John 20:1-9))  Pastor Don focuses on the differences between Peter's and Jesus' leadership styles.  He goes on to point out that no matter how big our sin or mistake, Jesus can make the most of it.  In the second half of the message Pastor Don identifies the type of love Jesus used when speaking with Peter during the Last Supper.  Note how Jesus changes the underlying meaning of the word love when asking Peter three times if he loved him.

#II John 21:15 - 17

  1. As you may know there are three Greek words for love.
  1. Agape love means a close intimated, unconditional love.
  2. Philo love means a brother love city of Philadelphia.
  3. Eros love means an erotica sexual love.
  1. Jesus said "Simon son of John do you truly love (agape) Me

    more than these?"

Jesus use's Peters full name. Ill: Donald Robert

Only time Jesus says these. Not a personal pronoun. These fishing boats, these nets of fish, do you want to go back to that old life style.

I Kings 19:19-21 read. 12 yoke of oxen. What sins do you need to burn - up that hinder your walk with God. Hebrews 11:15 read and Hebrews 12:1

Peter answered "Yes lord I love (philo) you."

    Jesus said "Feed my lambs."

Jesus said "Simon son of John do you truly love (agape) Me?

Peter answered "Yes Lord You know I love (philo) You."

    Take carry of my sheep.

Jesus ask a third time "Simon son of John, do You love (philo)

    Me?

Peter said "You know everything Lord, you know I love (philo) You."

    Feed My sheep.

Why three times? Peter denied Jesus three times.

Peter's answer showed Peter was beginning to humble himself. No boasting here.

    Philo not agape.

Our Love of Christ is always reflected in our service.

    Feed, take care, feed.

2a Vs. 19-21 There can be a tendencies to compare what we do for Christ with others.

    It is a childish attitude.

  2. Verse 22. Compared to a parents "Because I told you so, that's why"

But even those words are spoken with love.
